USC coach Will Muschamp had a couple of recruiting surprises to share with the media at his press conference Wednesday afternoon. He announced long time commitment DB Jonathan Gipson, who had said he would wait until February and take more visits, had signed. He also announced the signing of OL Jovaughn Gwyn (6-3 290) of Charlotte beating out NC State for his services.
Gwyn took his official visit to USC last weekend and visited several times earlier in the year for games, camps and recruiting events.
“The coaches say they like me a lot as a player and as a student,” Gwyn said. “They like how I play aggressive and fast. Coach Wolford said that he likes how I’m mean, I’m fast and I’m physical. He said that’s what he needs and what he wants.”
Gwyn was picked for the Shrine Bowl but wasn’t able to participate due to illness. He helped his team win a state championship earlier this month for the first time in 64 years.
Gwyn’s signing gives Muschamp 20 for the early signing period. He expects to add five more in February.
