DB Jaycee Horn of Alpharetta, GA announced a commitment to USC Monday night but he has known since his official visit weekend two weekends back that he would sign with the Gamecocks Wednesday and enroll in the summer. His unofficial visit to watch bowl practice last Saturday was just the icing on the cake for his decision.
“I feel like I made a great decision knowing the talent that (Coach Will) Muschamp and (defensive coordinator Travaris Robinson) T-Rob put in the league,” Horn said. “They know how to develop guys real good. A lot of teams say they can but they don’t have the proven track record. You don’t get much better than that. They told me I definitely would have the opportunity and when I was at bowl practice I saw that I would have the opportunity of starting if I come in and work.”
Horn appeared Tennessee bound for the longest time after a tense recruiting battle in the summer between the Gamecocks, Vols and Alabama. He committed to Tennessee in August but decommitted after the dismissal of coach Butch Jones and the following fiasco of a coaching search. All the while, Muschamp and Robinson remained on attack mode with him.
“They stayed on me every day, even after I committed we talked every day,” Horn said. ” No other head coach was that involved in my recruitment as much as he was. That’s what did it for me.”
It’s a moot point now but what if the Tennessee eruption had not happened, what if Jones was still the Vols’ coach with his staff in place, would Horn have still flipped to USC?
“I really don’t know,” he said. “I had a good relationship with those coaches. I had a lot of trust in Coach Warren that he could have made me into a great DB and help me develop my skills. I can’t really answer that. I don’t know.”
Horn said he will sign Wednesday around Noon with a couple of teammates. Horn is the son of former NFL star receiver Joe Horn.
