Frank Martin returned to his alma mater to coach a game for the first time, and it was a happy reunion for him as USC downed FIU 78-61. Chris Silva led the Gamecocks with a career high 26 points and 10 rebounds as they improve to 5-1 on the season.
USC led 38-36 at halftime before a 15-0 run, powered by three three-pointers by Justin Minaya, boosted the Gamecocks to a 57-38 lead. The Golden Panthers never got the deficit under ten from that point forward.
Maik Kotsar added 16 points and Minaya 13 to the Gamecocks’ scoring total. They finished at 52.5% shooting from the floor, the Gamecocks’ best shooting performance since last year’s NCAA Tournament.
USC is back in action Thursday night against Temple at Madison Square Garden. Tipoff on ESPNU will be 9:00 PM.
