USC does not leave Conway with the trophy in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Myrtle Beach but the Gamecocks do depart the Grand Strand with some momentum and confidence in their defensive prowess. USC defeated Western Michigan 79-66 for fifth place, their second win over the Broncos in a week. The Gamecocks are 4-1 and won’t return to game action until a trip to FIU on November 27th.
Turnovers and Wesley Myers off the bench were the big stories of the victory for USC. The Gamecocks forced 22 turnovers which they converted to 28 points. They turned up the defensive pressure in the second half and extended a 35-34 halftime lead to 57-40 halfway in to the second half. The Gamecocks held the Broncos scoreless for six minutes as they built their lead.
Myers gave the Gamecocks an offensive lift off the bench with 14 points as he used his ability to beat the defense off the dribble and get to the rim. Chris Silva added 14 points.
Free throw shooting was a mess for USC, not just today but in the three game tournament. The Gamecocks were 19-30 at the line today and missed 26 free throws in their three games.
