Less than 24 hours after a miserable performance in a loss to Illinois State, USC bounced back in a big way defeating UTEP 80-56 in day two of the Puerto Rico Tip-Off at Coastal Carolina’s HTC Center. The Gamecocks improved to 3-1 and will play Sunday at 2:00 PM in the fifth place game.
Unlike Thursday’s game, Friday featured a Gamecock team that made shots early, and with that brought the defensive energy missing Thursday. The Gamecocks never trailed jumping out to a 10-4 lead. A 16-4 run a few minutes later basically put the game away.
USC led 50-24 at halftime and didn’t let up in the second half extending the lead to 32. Frank Martin went to his bench liberally in the final minutes and 10 different players scored in the game.
Chris Silva led the Gamecocks with 15 points and 7 rebounds. Maik Kotsar and Justin Minaya added 14 each. Defensively, the Gamecocks forced 23 turnovers and converted them to 26 points.
