The last time USC faced a triple option FCS program in late November in Columbia, things didn’t go well for the home team. The Gamecocks lost to The Citadel that 2015 afternoon at Williams-Brice yielding 350 rushing yards and making a Bulldog legend out of Columbia native Tyler Renew who had 174 yards on the ground. Of course, that was a Gamecock team in major transition after Steve Spurrier walked out mid-season and left the dumpster fire of a season in the hands of Shawn Elliott.
No one can blame the Gamecocks for not being totally focused on the task at hand that day. In fact, they rebounded admirably the next week and fought a Clemson team bound for the CFP to a five point game.
This Saturday, the Gamecocks say it’s a different story as one of the best triple options teams in the FCS, the Wofford Terriers, come to Williams-Brice. Players speaking earlier this week insisted they are focused on this game and vow not to suffer a repeat upset.
