Will Muschamp has not named his starting quarterback for USC’s home opener Saturday against East Carolina, but there are solid indications that it will be freshman Brandon McIlwain. Perry Orth started the first two games, but was relieved in the second half of last week’s loss by McIlwain, who proceeded to lead the Gamecocks on their only two touchdown drives of the game. There’s no question that McIlwain offers the most upside, but Orth has been getting the nod initially because of his edge in experience.
Running back A.J. Tuner told reporters he liked what McIlwain brought to the offense last week, especially in regard to tempo. It wasn’t a full fledged endorsement for turning the job over to him, but his words were telling. Regardless of who starts behind center, the offensive line will have to perform better than it did in Starkville. That is another topic Turner touched on with reporters.
