USC coach Will Muschamp fired off his “Spurs Up” commitment alert around 11:40 Friday morning and it was for one of this top recruiting victories so far for the 2017 class. DE MJ Webb (6-3 270) of Madison, GA, who was in for an unofficial visit earlier in the day, picked the Gamecocks over Auburn, Tennessee and Kentucky. Some of the other offers he had during the recruiting process were Clemson, Nebraska, Florida State, Michigan, Notre Dame, LSU and Georgia.
Webb made four visits to USC during this recruiting season capped by Friday’s visit with his coach. He brought his grandmother in for one visit and was also in for the Spurs Up Cooking in late July. And his decision to give Muschamp a “Spurs Up” was not a spur of the moment thing.
“Actually, I had my mind made up Monday about it. I just didn’t tell anyone. And I made it public today because I wanted to tell Muschamp in person face to face.”
Webb played it coy earlier this week when asked about possibly committing on this visit. He said he was also getting a strong push from the other three finalists and wanted to wait until November. But in the back of his mind after weighing all the data he determined the Gamecocks and Muschamp offered him the best opportunity.
“The campus is great,” Webb said. “I can see myself going there if football wasn’t a factor. I see myself coming in a getting to work and earning play time freshman year. and coach Muschamp being a defensive minded head coach makes it even better.”
Webb is well aware Muschamp is doing some rebuilding at USC and the Gamecocks could take their lumps this season. But he said he won’t be discouraged if the Gamecocks lose more than their win and believes the future is bright.
“We’re gonna have those games where we might have a bad game and lose by a lot and might not have a winning season, but I believe in coach Muschamp and the entire coaching staff and players,” Webb said. “Win or lose, I’m a Gamecock and that’s all that matters to me right now.”
Last season Webb had 77 tackles and 7 sacks. He gives the Gamecocks 21 commitments for the 2017 class.
