Three years ago Clemson landed the best player in West Virginia in Donte Grantham. The Tigers are back in the state once again seeking one of its best in 6-7 Chase Johnson, a native of Ripley who will play this season at Huntington Prep.
Johnson also has an offer from USC but at this point appears to be more involved with Clemson than the Gamecocks. His coach at Huntington, Arkell Bruce, has been in touch with the Clemson staff but not the Gamecocks. He said Johnson and his family plan to take an unofficial visit to Clemson September. They are also planning unofficial visits to Tennessee and Florida.
“I’ve talked with (Clemson) once and they expressed that they really want him,” Bruce said. “He fits how they play. He has the ability to do things on the court. He’s soaking it all in, visiting places. He likes it in the hot weather. He’ll take visits and he and his family will decide what’s best from there.
At this point, Bruce does not expect Johnson to sign early.
Other offers for Johnson include Vanderbilt, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Arizona, Marquette, TCU, Kansas State, Penn State, Butler, West Virginia, Richmond and Georgia Tech.
