USC will get highly touted quarterback Jake Bentley on campus a year earlier than expected. Bentley announced today that he will graduate high school a year early and join the USC football team this summer. That would put him in the quarterback mix for this season with freshman Brandon McIlwain, incumbent starter Perry Orth, former starter Connor Mitch, spot starter Lorenzo Nunez and Michael Scarneccia.
Here’s the statement Bentley tweeted:

This is an interesting decision in that it takes away the gap between Brandon McIlwain and Bentley. McIlwain was considered the quarterback of the future when turned down the MLB and signed with the Gamecocks to play football. The thought was Bentley would come in in 2017, redshirt, then compete for the job McIlwain’s junior year. Now both of them will be competing for the job next year, although McIlwain has the advantage of a winter and spring in the program. Adding further intrigue is the fact Bentley is the son of USC running backs coach Bobby Bentley.
An already interesting quarterback competition just got even more intriguing.
