AC Flora WR/DB Denzel Johnson let Signing Day pass without applying his signature to any documents. But he’s hopeful the document he signs this Saturday will open the door to what he really wants, a letter of intent from Clemson.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney wants to add Johnson to his already sterling 2015 class but can’t do it until Johnson elevates his academic status. This Saturday Johnson will take the ACT again and if reality meets his expectations a couple of weeks down the road when the score returns, he will be on his way to the Upstate.
‘I’m real close,” Johnson said of his academic positioning. ‘I’m doing everything I need to right now. I just need to increase my GP and test.”
Johnson said Swinney checked in with him earlier in the week. “He was just seeing how my grades were.” Johnson said Swinney reassured him he has a spot in the class if he qualifies.
Johnson said he’s also still talking with Massachusetts, Liberty, Towson and SC State. He also heard from USC’s Steve Spurrier Jr. earlier in the week, but the Gamecocks want him to go to junior college first and he’s not interested in that.
Clemson is where Johnson sees himself down the road. He wanted to commit to the Tigers during his official visit weekend in January but his academic situation put a stop to that, at least for the time being.
Last season Johnson had 66 catches for 910 yards and 2 touchdowns. He also had 60 tackles on defense and broke up 8 passes. Johnson played in the Touchstone Energy North-South Game.
