The Clemson defense got a quick three and out on the opening possession and the Tiger offense went right to work driving to the Maryland 14 yard line. But the Tigers bogged down in the red zone and Chandler Cantanzaro booted a 31 yard field goal. Tajh Boyd was 5-7 for 37 yards on the drive and went over 10,000 career passing yards. Clemson 3-0.
That lead did not last long. On the second play of their next possession, the Terps broke a big scoring play, a 71 yard pass from Greer native Caleb Rowe to Levern Jacobs. Jacobs made the catch in the middle of the Clemson secondary and ran right past the Tiger defenders for the score. Maryland 7-3.
The Tigers responded with another long drive of 15 plays. They reached the Terps’ 4 but were stonewalled on three straight plays from there including a sack of Boyd on third down. Cantanzaro came on once again and connected from 29 yards. Maryland 7-6.
Late in the quarter Maryland put together another drive in to Clemson territory with the big play a third and fourteen pass of 22 yards from Rowe to Jacobs to the Clemson 32 on the final play of the quarter.
Rowe passed for 114 yards n the quarter to Boyd’s 51. Rod McDowell had 54 rushing yards for Clemson.
