South Carolina junior outfielder Evan Marzilli has been selected in the eighth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Marzilli was the No. 273 overall pick by the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Marzilli earned 2012 SEC All-Defensive team honors and he is one of two players on the squad this year to have started all 60 games. Marzilli is hitting .288 (68-for-236) with 12 doubles, three triples, a pair of homers, 30 RBI and 50 runs scored.
Gamecock senior left-hander Michael Roth has been selected in the ninth round of the 2012 MLB Draft. Roth was the No. 297 overall pick in the draft by the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Roth is the fourth current Gamecock player to be selected in this year’s draft.
A two-time captain and the 2012 SEC H. Boyd McWhorter Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year, Roth is 6-1 with a 2.68 ERA in 16 starts with 107.1 innings pitched. He has 76 strikeouts to 35 walks and opponents are batting just .215 against him. In SEC games, Roth went 3-1 with a 3.43 ERA. He hurled 65.2 innings in 10 league starts. Roth earned Consensus All-America honors in 2011 and was CollegeBaseballInsider.com’s National Player of the Year. He started both the championship-clinching games of the 2010 and 2011 College World Series in Omaha, Neb.
