Early this morning we received these letters from W.C. Hood Jr. from the Clemson General Counsel and Bob Ariai, the attorney for Sammy Watkins. Even though the emails and phone numbers in the letters are public, we redacted them here to respect those individuals privacy. These letters come less than a week after Clemson denied a FOIA request from us to review the police cam video.
Here are the letters:
I’m writing in follow up to my letter dated May 23, 2012 stating that the release of the records you requested would be premature at that time. The status of the matter has changed and the release of the records is no longer premature. For a copy of the records please contact Robin Denny at 864-xxxx or firstname.lastname@example.org to arrange delivery.
Questions about the status of Mr. Watkins’ case should be directed to the 13th Circuit Solicitor’s office at 864-xxx-xxx or to Mr. Watkins’ attorney, Bob Ariail, email@example.com.
W.C. Hood, Jr.
We also received this letter from Watkins attorney, Bob Ariail:
As attorney for Sammy Watkins, I wish to advise that Clemson University gave us a copy of the video sought by various news outlets and allowed us time to review it. Although I advised my client that he has sufficient legal rights to prevent the release of the video, we chose not to exercise those as we wish to cooperate with everyone involved in this matter. I informed Clemson University on Friday that we have no objection to the release of the video recording. This recording will confirm that my client was not under the influence of drugs or impaired and was respectful toward authorities who thanked him for his cooperation. We trust that this will allow us to continue to move forward to a conclusion of this matter.
We are in the process of reviewing the video and we hope to have it posted shortly.
