The South Carolina/USC Upstate baseball game has been cancelled due to heavy rain and lightning. The game will not be made up.
The Spartans were leading the Gamecocks 3-0 when the game was stopped in the middle of the second inning. The coaches and umpires waited until just past 10:30 PM to call the game as rain and lightening continued in the Columbia area.
The Spartans jumped on Gamecock starter Colby Holmes for all the runs in the top of the first. Holmes was making his first appearance since April 22nd due to a pulled muscle in his shoulder and was not sharp. He only faced six batters and gave up the three runs on three hits. He also hit a batter. Nolan Belcher relieved Holmes with two outs in the first.
The Spartans scored their runs on a RBI single by Luke Weber, a sacrifice fly by Greg Guers and a RBI single by Tyler Cook. Upstate starter Brandon Lee set the Gamecocks down in order in the bottom of the first.
But the rain washed it all away and there will be no statistical history of the short meeting.
The Gamecocks are back in action this weekend in their final SEC series of the year as they play host to LSU.
