For the second time in a month, Clemson basketball coach Brad Brownell has a vacancy to fill on his staff. Tiger assistant James Johnson is on his way back to Virginia Tech to take over the Hokie program.
A couple of weeks ago Brownell plucked Johnson off the Virginia Tech staff to replace Rick Ray on his bench. Them ove came shortly after Ray left to take over the head coaching job at Mississippi State. And now Johnson is returning to Blacksburg take over for his old boss Seth Greenburg.
Johnson was one of three assistant coaches to leave Greenburg’s staff. Greenburg was reportedly given the boot after nine seasons because of his bad relationship with the athletic department and staff at Virginia Tech. This may be why Johnson opted out even after the Hokies offered to match Clemson’s offer.
Almost immediately after Greenburg was fired Johnson’s named was mentioned as a potential replacement.
