Football combine and scouting expert David Schuman joined us on SportsTalk First Edition this afternoon to break down the players with state ties that could be selected in Thursday night’s first round. USC’s Melvin Ingram, Stephon Gilmore and Alshon Jeffery, along with Clemson’s Andre Branch and Dwayne Allen are all projected as potential first rounders.
Schuman doesn’t think Ingram will fall past the Seahawks in the number 12 spot. Seattle is looking for a rush end outside linebacker type and Ingram fills that role. Gilmore’s stock has been rising the past few weeks. Schuman said Jacksonville could take a look at him with the number seven pick. The Panthers, could also select the Rock Hill native with the ninth pick.
As for Jeffery, Schuman thinks he could slip to the second round. Concerns over Jeffery’s speed, or lack thereof, appear to be the biggest strike against the former Calhoun County star.
Schuman said he would not be surprised if Branch goes in the first round. NFL scouts have been impressed with the Tiger defensive end. Clemson tight end Dwyane Allen will probably go sometime in the second round, but could sneak into the first.
