OL Brandon Smith (6-7 325) of Kernersville, NC has an offer from East Carolina with interest from Clemson, USC, North Carolina, NC State, Maryland, Connecticut, Notre Dame and Minnesota. He felt the Tigers were close to offering but has yet to receive that offer. “I’m going to go to a camp down there and we’ll see what happens,” Smith said. He plans to attend a spring practice in the Upstate and could swing by Columbia. “I need to talk to my mom to see what she thinks about that,” he said. “They have sent me mail inviting me to one of their spring practices.” He has ECU out front. “Obviously they’re my favorite because they’re my only offer right now,” he said. “They told me something very important to me. They said the main reason they offered was because of my character. That meant a lot.” Of the schools that have yet to offer, NC State is showing the most interest in the lineman.
DE Devin Washington (6-3 226) of Orlando will visit USC, Georgia Tech, Duke and NC State next week during his spring break. It will be his first trip to each school with the exception of Georgia Tech. “I’m going to narrow my list to 10 after spring ball and South Carolina is up there with me right now,” Washington said. “After my visit, they could be even higher. I’m really looking forward to getting to see what they’re all about. I want to get to know all the schools. I want to see it more for myself and get a feel for the school and see if it’s a place where I can myself at.” He will be at USC on Tuesday with his parents. He talked with Gamecock recruiter Grady Brown Wednesday. “USC and Central Florida are recruiting the hardest,” he said. “USC messages me every day. I’ve gotten handwritten letters the past three weeks. And coach Spurrier sent me three letters. I talk to them on the phone every week.” Washington’s offer sheet has grown to 16 with USC, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt, South Florida, SMU, West Virginia, Rutgers, Cincinnati, Louisville, Duke, Kansas, Florida International, Illinois and Central Florida among them. He hopes to have his list down to five by the beginning of the summer. “I’m probably only going to attend one or two camps this year because I did like 10 or 11 last year,” he said. “I’ll probably go to my top two schools for camps, but that’s it.” He did not name a leader.
ATH Chucky Williams (6-2 180) of Hialeah, FL has offers from USC, Clemson, Vanderbilt, Illinois, Western Kentucky, Purdue, Bowling Green, Bethune-Cookman, UMass, Louisville and South Florida with interest from Wake Forest. Williams has visited Clemson and USC and appreciates the two schools. “If I could play for two schools I would play for Clemson and South Carolina,” Williams said. “If I had to choose one I would probably say South Carolina. I really like (secondary coach and assistant special teams coordinator) Grady Brown. He really impressed me with the way he teaches the position.” Williams says the Gamecocks are recruiting him strictly as a cornerback while the Tigers are looking at him to play anywhere in the secondary. His other visits were to Miami and Florida International and he will visit USF in the next two weeks. He had approximately 40 tackles as a junior. Williams threw for nine touchdowns adding 13 more on the ground. He will attend several camps this summer with those schools yet to be determined. He does not have a favorite but plans to make a decision sometime this summer.
