DE Kenderius Whitehead of Atlanta committed to NC State Wednesday night stunning Clemson and Georgia and surprising USC. Whitehead was, for most of the recruiting campaign, thought to be a strong lean to Georgia. Then he visited Clemson last weekend and Wednesday morning it appeared the Tigers were in strong shape. But also Wednesday morning, USC met with him and got him to schedule an official visit for January 28th. But Whitehead apparently ended it all Wednesday night when he notified the Wolfpack and made his pledge.
DE Josh Dawson of Tucker, GA committed to Vanderbilt in June but has opened things back up and let USC and Georgia back in. “Everything is equal right now,” Dawson said Wednesday night. “I know I’m going to be somewhere in the SEC, Georgia, Vanderbilt or South Carolina. I’ll choose between those three and try to make the right decision. I’ll announce on Signing Day.” Dawson met Wednesday morning with USC recruiter Lorenzo Ward and set up his official visit for January 28th. He went to Georgia last weekend and will visit Vanderbilt this coming weekend. He considered USC before committing and after their 11-2 season, he finds the Gamecocks even more attractive. “It’s just the play of their defense and their reputation for defensive linemen,” he said. “It’s a great opportunity.”
USC will not get a visit from DL Dalvin Tomlinson of McDonough, GA his coach said Thursday. USC recruiter Lorenzo Ward talked with Tomlinson earlier in the week in an effort to get him to visit, but coach Mike Rozier said Tomlinson is sticking with his final three of Georgia Tech, Georgia and Alabama. He has taken official visits to Tech and Alabama and has been to Georgia several times unofficially. A Georgia recruiter was at the school Thursday to meet with him.
New USC running backs coach Everette Sands joined Lorenzo Ward Thursday on a visit with RB Mike Davis of Stone Mountain, GA. It was the first time the Gamecock commitment had a chance to meet with his new position coach. “It was great,” Davis said of the visit with Sands. “It was good to see us having a coach and I look forward to him coaching me.” Davis has maintained he’s a solid USC commitment, but he won’t totally rule out an official visit to Clemson next weekend. “It’s possible,” Davis said of a visit, “but I don’t know.”
Gaffney WR Quinshad Davis is having an in home visit with Tennessee coach Derek Dooley tonight. Davis also has met with recruiters from North Carolina and Wake Forest this week. USC has not been in this week. Davis will visit North Carolina this weekend and Tennessee January 28th. He visited Wake Forest last weekend. All four schools are still in it according to coach Dan Jones and Davis will announce on Signing Day at a time to be determined.
DE JaMichael Winston of Mobile, AL makes the second of his three official visits this weekend when he comes to Clemson. He visited Arkansas last weekend and will visit Michigan State January 28th. Winston has been committed to Arkansas but that commitment is not locked in stone. His coach said he’ll make a final decision on Signing Day. Coach Kerry Stevenson said Winston is not that familiar with Clemson, so this weekend’s visit will be keyfor him. “He doesn’t know much about Clemson,” Stevenson said. “Coach (Marion) Hobby is a friend of mine.” Hobby visited Winston earlier in the week. Coaches from Arkansas, North Carolina, Tennessee and Michigan State also have been in this week. Winston had 91 tackles and 16 sacks last season.
USC has not thrown in the towel totally on DB Eli Shumate of Ramsey, NJ. Shumate once favored the Gamecocks before changing to Notre Dame. He committed to the Irish earlier this month. Wednesday, USC recruiter Jeep Hunter met with Shumate for a few minutes at his school. Shumate was open to the conversation but has not indicated any shift away from the Irish at this point. GA Mangus is Shumate’s regular recruiter for USC but is not allowed on the road this month. He has been in phone contact with Shumate. Hunter also visited with USC commitment LB Kaiwan Lewis while in New Jersey. He also checked in on some juniors including DB Tre Bell of Jersey City who was offered by the Gamecocks Wednesday.
