Oklahoma co-defensive coordinator Brent Venables returned to Norman Sunday night after spending the weekend at Clemson meeting with Tigers head coach Dabo Swinney and, reportedly, with some members of the Tigers’ recruiting class who were in for official visits.
Oklahoma beat writers who talked with Venables upon his return were given little information. Travis Haney and Jake Trotter both reported Venables denied a report he has accepted an offer from Clemson. He would not comment further.
Dean Blevins, a TV sports anchor in Oklahoma City, reported that according to sources Clemson is willing to offer Venables $750-thousand dollars per season, and if he stayed at OU, he would be bumped up to about $600-thousand. Venables makes $440-thousand per season now.
The Tulsa World reported that Swinney wants to interview former Miami head coach and defensive coordinator Randy Shannon before making a final decision.
