Former Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele joined us on SportsTalk Friday night in his first interview since his departure from the Tigers staff. There has been some debate on whether Steele was fired or quit (Dabo Swinney said it was neither), but if you listen to Steele he doesn’t sound like a guy that was ready to walk away.
“In this business when a head coach calls you and tell you he wants to see you at 7:30 in the morning, and that’s never happened before, obviously you go to bed thinking ‘hmmm, this may not be good’ and it turned out it wasn’t. It is what it is.”
Steele said it was a short meeting with Swinney Thursday morning and said that there wasn’t a lot of discussion. When he was asked if the departure was amicable Steele paused and said, “Uh, I guess.”
Steele definitely sounded like a guy that was fired, although he never came out and said that is what happened. “Let’s just say I’m not the defensive coordinator at Clemson anymore,” he said after mentioning he wanted to remain politically correct.
Steele said the rumors about his health are untrue and that he wants to coach again. He said he’s already heard from several programs.
