USC took the opening kickoff and going strictly to the air got a first down on its first play. But Connor Shaw was sacked twice and the Gamecocks were forced to punt. Nebraska started at the USC 46 and on the third play Taylor Martinez hit Kenny Bell with a 30 yard touchdown. The extra point was blocked by Travian Robertson and returned for two points by Stephon Gilmore. With 11:58 to play in the quarter, Nebraska led 6-2.
The Gamecocks got a good kickoff return by Bruce Ellington to their own 45. Steve Spurrier then went to his ground game calling 9 straight running plays. Kenny Miles had the biggest run nof 24 yards. Actually, there were ten straight runs because Connor Shaw turned a called pass into a first down scramble. The Gamecocks reached the Nebraska one and on fourth down Shaw pushed his way across for the score. With 6:04 to play in the quarter, USC led 9-6.
It appeared USC got a stop on Nebraska’s next possession forcing a punt that was downed at the USC five. But Kelcy Quarles was called for a facemask penalty and the Cornhuskers kept the football. They drove to the one where Ameer Abdullah ran in from a yard out. With 3:33 left in the quarter, Nebraska led 13-9.
