The USC defense came up with a huge play just as it appeared Nebraska would score in the second quarter. Ameer Abdullah was hit by DJ Swearinger after taking a pitch out around the right side at the USC eight. The ball popped straight up in the air and was recovered by the Gamecocks Aldrick Fordham.
Connor Shaw hit Alshon Jeffery on a 70 yard pass to the Nebraska six. The Gamecocks reached the one but a delay penalty set them back five yards and they had to settle for a 20 yard Jay Wooten field goal attempt which he missed.
The quarter stayed scoreless until the final seconds. Stephon Gilmore intercepted Taylor Martinez at the Gamecock 29. On the final play of the half, Shaw hits Jeffery with a 51 yard TD pass. Jeffery jumped up and over three Nebraska defenders to make the catch and then dove into the end zone.
At the half, USC 16-Nebraska 13.
