College of Charleston built a 17 point lead in the second half and fought off a furious rally by Coastal Carolina to take a 77-70 win in Conway Thursday night. The Chanticleers cut the lead to three with just under five minutes to play. But Antwaine Wiggins hit a three pointer to kick start a 10-0 Cougar run. Coastal never got within five the rest of the way.
An interesting sidenote….Coastal was hit with two pre-game technicals for dunking in warmup. That led to four made free throws by Andrew Lawrence. Also, Charleston’s Matt Sundberg hit a half court three pointer at the halftime buzzer. As Charleston coach Bobby Cremins said after the game…”We stole seven points.” And the Cougars won by seven.
Lawrence led Charleston in scoring with 18 points. Sundberg added 17 off the bench and was 5-7 from three point range. Anthony Raffa led Coastal with 17.
Charleston hit 11 three pointers to Coastal’s 6 and outscored the Chants from the line 18-4.
Charleston improves to 10-2 and is 4-0 against in-state teams this season with wins also over Clemson, The Citadel and Charleston Southern. Coastal falls to 9-3 with its second straight loss.
