USC assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson left Columbia at 1:00 PM and flew to Hattiesburg, MS for a second interview with Southern Miss officials regarding the school’s head coaching position. Johnson’s wife accompanied him on the trip.
Johnson was expected to meet with the university president on this trip. Johnson first interviewed for the job last week and has been considered one of the favorites along with USM offensive coordinator Blake Anderson.
The website FootballScoop.com has reported this afternoon that Johnson will be named the new coach at USM.
Should Johnson leave USC, one likely candidate to replace him will be former Arizona head coach Mike Stoops. Stoops and the Spurrier family are close. Steve Spurrier Jr. was hired by Bob Stoops at Oklahoma and later by Mike Stoops at Arizona.
