USC assistant head coach for defense Ellis Johnson interviewed Thursday with Southern Miss officials for the Golden Eagles head coaching job. The interview took place in Atlanta.
According to a source, Johnson and current Southern Miss offensive coordinator Blake Anderson are the top two choices. Anderson was interviewed on Tuesday. The source said a decision is expected to be made by Saturday.
The source said Southern Miss officials were thought to favor the idea of staying with an offensive minded coach to replace Larry Fedora who left for the North Carolina job. But the source added that must not be completely the case since Johnson was brought in for the interview.
The source said Johnson already has, at least on paper, put together the staff he would have at Southern Miss.
Some of the other reported candidates for the job include Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart, Murray State head coach Chris Hatcher, Louisiana Lafayette offensive coordinator Jay Johnson, Oklahoma State offensive coordinator Todd Monken, and former Ole Miss and USC defensive coordinator Tyrone Nix.
