USC took the opening kickoff and moved down the field. Connor Shaw had a 19 yard run on a called pass play, and he hit tight end Justice Cunningham on a dump off that he turned into a 16 yard gain to the Clemson 24. But Andre Branch sacked Shaw on a third down play and the Gamecocks settled for a 47 yard field goal by Jay Wooten. With 10:23 left in the quarter, USC leads 3-0.
Clemson went three and out on its first possession, and then the Gamecocks struck from deep. Shaw hit Bruce Ellington on a post pattern for a 49 yard scoring strike. That was the longest pass of Shaw’s career. With 6:36 left in the quarter, USC leads 10-0.
Late in the quarter, USC is forced to punt and Clemson starts at drive at its 39. The Tigers get their first first down of the game on the last play of the quarter.
