Saturday night’s rivalry matchup between Clemson and USC will be a family affair for Andre and Bruce Ellington. The two are cousins and both wear number 23. They played together at Berkley High School. Andre is the starting running back for the Tigers, Bruce plays wide receiver, returns kicks and runs plays out of the Wildcat formation for the Gamecocks.
“We have played against another pretty much our whole lives,” Andre said. The Tigers junior running back acknowledged Bruce, who is also led the Gamecock basketball team in scoring last year, may be the better athlete of the two.
“He’s very talented, I’ll say that. I give it to him, he’s far more athletic than I am. He can do a lot more things than I can. As you can see he plays basketball too, so I am not really a good basketball player.”
Andre and Bruce have talked a little this week. No trash talk, they both were checking on the other’s ankle injuries. Andre sat out the Georgia Tech game with a tender ankle, and Bruce tweaked his ankle in last weekend’s win over The Citadel. As for which one’s ankle is feeling better?
“Hope I do,” Andre joked.
As you might expect, there will be a lot of the Ellington family in the stands at Williams-Brice Stadium this weekend. They will be wearing custom shirts that feature both Clemson and USC. Regardless of how the game turns out, there is no doubt the Ellington clan will leave the stadium happy Saturday night.
