Clemson tried to get something going to open the half moving to the State 41 but was stopped on downs there. Adding to their issues, the Tigers lost left tackle Brandon Thomas to a knee injury on the drive. The Wolfpack hit a couple of long passes to get to the Clemson 14. They eventually reached the 1 but couldn’t knock it in and Niklas Sade knocked thru a 21 yard field goal for a 30-3 lead.
The Tigers matched that field goal on their next possession. Tajh Boyd hit DeAndre Hopkins for 43 yards to the State 27. Boyd then ran to the 15, but three incompletions killed the drive and Chandler Cantanzaro booted a 32 yard field goal. With 8:44 to play in the quarter, NC State leads 30-6.
Any momentum Clemson might have generated was quickly wiped out on State’s next series. A screen pass against the blitz to James Washington went for 22 yards to the Clemson 43. And on the next play, Tobias Palmer took a short pass and turned it into a spectacular run down the sideline for a touchdown. State leads 37-6 with 5:41 left in the quarter.
Clemson put a quick drive together with Boyd throwing on every down. The Tigers reached the State 18 but on 4th down Boyd was intercepted by David Ammerson at the one. That was Ammerson’s ACC record tieing 11 pick of the season. It also was Boyds 5th interception in his last three games.
And Boyd made it six picks on the next possession. The Tigers reached the State 9 on a 41 yard pass to Hopkins in which he pulled the ball away from Brandan Bishop. But Bishop got even two plays later intercepting Boyd in the end zone.
End of quarter…NC State 37-Clemson 6
