Clemson surged late in the first half and early in the second half to run away from The Citadel 73-50 Wednesday night in Charleston. The Tigers led only 16-12 with 8:18 to play in the first half. They outscored the Bulldogs the rest of the period 21-9 for a 39-21 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs scored the first five points of the second half before falling victim to Clemson’s defensive pressure. The Tigers went from a 39-26 lead to a 55-26 lead in a matter of seven minutes. The Citadel suffered four turnovers during the stretch and had 16 on the night. Clemson also blocked 11 shots and had 6 steals. The Citadel shot just 30% for the game to Clemson’s 54%.
Brad Brownell went deep into his bench substituting liberally throughout the game. Nine Tigers logged at least 11 minutes of game time. Devin Booker led the scoring with 14 points. Tanner Smith added 11. Mike Groselle led the Bulldogs with 16 points to go along with 11 boards.
Clemson is 2-0 and returns home Saturday night to meet the College of Charleston. The Citadel is 1-2 and will host Florida Christian Monday night.
