The USC basketball team opened its season with a tidy 75-50 win over Western Carolina Friday night at Colonial Life Arena. Freshman forward Anthony Gill led the Gamecocks with14 points. All ten players that dressed scored. Brenton Williams (13) and Malik Cooke (10) were the only others to hit double figures. All of Williams’ points came in 17 minutes off the bench.
USC shot 51 percent from the floor and held the Catamounts to 36 percent. The Gamecocks went to the press to create 19 turnovers that lead to 22 points. While the press was effective, Darrin Horn didn’t rely on it as much as he has in the past. He mixed up the defenses and forced his offense to find shots out of half court sets. Horn’s teams have struggled in the half court the past three seasons and it appears this is going to be a point of emphasis early in the season.
USC returns to the court next Tuesday with a road game at Elon. That game will tip off at 7:00.
