Steve Spurrier completed another of his desired “firsts” at USC Saturday afternoon with USC’s 17-12 win over his alma mater, Florida. For the first time, the Gamecocks wented undefeated in a season against the SEC East. Their six league wins also is a school record.
And the Gamecocks did it in very un-Spurrier like fashion. They completed just seven passes, the fewest they’ve completed in a game since their 2005 win over Florida. Spurrier called a game which would have made Danny Ford proud, including some true option pitches to the tailback.
The Gamecocks are now 8-2 overall, 6-2 in the SEC. It’s the 8th time in school history USC has had at least eight wins in a season. The Gamecocks need Auburn to beat Georgia in Athens later today, or for Kentucky to beat the Bulldogs next week, to win the SEC East for the second straight season.
The Gamecocks return next Saturday to face The Citadel. Kickoff is set for shortly after noon.
