USC gets an early break on the game’s first possession. Ellis Johnson dialed up a corner blitz and Stephon Gilmore hit John Brantley and forced a fumble the Gamecocks recovered at the Gator 35. But the offense was inept. A holding penalty on TJ Johnson set them back 10 yards. Connor Shaw was then dropped for a five yard loss. A 14 yard completion of Alshon Jeffery got the Gamecocks back to the Gator 36 where the drive died on downs.
The Florida defense made a big play on USC’s next possesison. De”Ante Saunders picked off Shaw as he tried to hit Jeffery in the middle of the field throwing back across his body. The Gators took over at the USC 48 and drove to the Gamecock two hitting them up the middle with some big runs. But the Gamecock defense got big plays from Sharrod Golightly and DJ Swearenger and forced a 21 yard field goal attempt by Caleb Sturgis. He connected to make it Florida 3-0 with 6:01 left in the quarter. It’s the 13th straight game USC’s opponent has scored first.
The Gamecocks put a drive together as the quarter ends and are at the Gators’ 23 to start the second quarter.
