USC started the second quarter with a first and ten on its own 42. The Gamecocks didn’t end up making any progress and punted from near midfield. The Vols took over on their own 12.
After forcing a three and out and a punt, USC reclaimed possession on the Vols 42 yard line. After picking up a first down on a Damiere Byrd end around, USC faced a forth and one on the next series. The Gamecocks went for it and scored a touchdown on a 23 yard pass from Connor Shaw to freshman tight end Rory Anderson. That gave USC a 7-3 lead with 7:43 left in the quarter.
On its next drive Tennesse moved the ball to the USC 43 yard line before turning it over on downs. After Da’Rick Rogers dropped a sure touchdown on third down the Vols were stuffed on fourth and short. USC took over on the 43 with 4:48 left in the half.
USC moved across midfield to the Tennessee 40 yard line before the drive stalled. The Gamecocks punted on 4th and six to give the Vols the ball back with 3:19 left in the quarter.
Tennessee started the drive on its own nine yard line. Justin Worley completed a pair of nice passes to move the ball out to the 47 yard line but the Vols were not able to push it over midfield before they punted.
Following a 39 yard punt USC took over on its own 11 yard line with just 1:02 left in the half. The Gamecocks didn’t have any timeouts to work with and the half ended with them on their own 44 yard line.
