USC won’t be the only one starting a brand new tailback Saturday. Clemson coach Dabo Swinney said after practice Thursday that redshirt freshman DJ Howard will start in place of Andre Ellington Saturday at Georgia Tech.
Ellington has been hampered by a sprained ankle. He will be available for the game but Swinney said based on what they saw in practice this week, Howard is the best call right now.
Howard is the team’s third leading rusher behind Ellington and Mike Bellamy. He has rushed for 167 yards on 25 carries, an average of 6.7 yards per carry. His longest run of the season has been 37 yards.
