Before last Saturday’s game with Mississippi State Auburn’s favorite eagle “Spirit” decided to fly beak first into a luxury box window. Spirit was making his normal flight around the stadium in front of 80,000 drunken, screaming fans when went Kamikaze and flew directly into the glass. It happens at the 19 second mark of the video below.
So what does it all mean? Is Spirit trying to escape? Was Cecil Newton sitting in that luxury box? Is Spirit suicidal? Inquiring minds want to know.
Fortunately X-Rays revealed no major injuries to Spirit and he will be back on the job for next week’s game against Florida Atlantic.
I’ve seen this eagle trick in person a few times and I’ve always been amused. The first time I saw it I was sitting in the stands and this bird came within two inches of the people in front of me. I literally thought he was coming in to claw their faces off. I asked if that is normal and the Auburn alum I was attending the game with said, “no, that was pretty close.” And before last year’s Auburn-USC game there were reports of Spirit coming mighty close to flying into the press box. If you listen close in the video you can see fans covering their faces and heads as Spirit makes his approach.
Spirit isn’t the first mascot to go off script in the pregame. The Air Force Falcon “Mach 1” decided he had seen enough of Shreveport during last year’s Independence Bowl. When the released him he high tailed it out of the stadium as fast as he could. Anyone that has spent time in Shreveport understands why. He did return.
Also, the Atlanta Hawks mascot, also named Spirit and may or may not be related or even the same eagle that works at Auburn, caused a ruckus at Phillips Arena a couple of years ago.
These crazy birds nowadays.
