Billy Wingo is recognized as one of Clemson’s all time best athletes. The Union native signed to play baseball with the Tigers in 1973 and later walked on the football team. He was a standout second baseman on two College World Series teams and became a starter in the secondary for the football team. Wingo is in the Clemson Athletic Hall of Fame.
But today he may be better known as the father of former USC second baseman Scott Wingo, the most outstanding player in this year’s College World Series. The younger Wingo is about to begin his pro baseball career in the Dodger organization. Monday, Billy Wingo joined us on SportsTalk First Edition to discuss his son’s USC career and his own feelings about him playing for the Gamecocks and not the Tigers.
