We caught up with USC baseball coach Ray Tanner after the Gamecocks workout this afternoon at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha. The biggest news of the day involves the health of sophomore outfielder Evan Marzilli. Marzlilli injured his hamstring during a workout Thursday afternoon. Following today’s practice Tanner said if the team had to play today Marzilli would not be available.
Meanwhile, Jackie Bradley Jr. had another good day. Bradley Jr. has not played since April 23rd and Thursday took batting practice for the first time since injuring his wrist at Mississippi State. He didn’t have any ill effects and took BP again today without issue. He also looked good fielding in center field.
With Marzilli’s status in serious question it is now not beyond the realm of possibility that Bradley Jr. could potentially start in center field Sunday. Tanner did not say this directly, but he didn’t rule it out either.
Marzilli has until Sunday to recover from the injury and two days can make a big difference with a hamstring. However, if he can’t go the hunch here is Tanner slides number 19 back into center field.
USC opens the College World Series Sunday night at 7:00 against Texas A&M.
