USC recruiter Brad Lawing was by Columbia High earlier this week to check on WR Casey Gladney. USC has not offered Gladney but would like to see him in camp this summer. Caps coach Kemper Amick said Miami plans to visit next Wednesday or Thursday and Auburn is coming in on May 9th. Amick said Auburn and Alabama are very high on Gladney who had 50 receptions and scored 16 touchdowns last season. He has offers from Kentucky, Tennessee and Cincinnati. Amick said recruiters also are checking out his QB/LB Ky Tyler (6-2 215). Gladney and Tyler will be participating in upcoming Shrine Bowl combines at Spartanburg and Blythewood High Schools.
5-11 Anthony Hickey of Hopkinsville, KY had planned to take an official visit to USC but his coach said Friday the Gamecocks are no longer on his list. “South Carolina is no longer a school of interest to Anthony” Kerry Stovall said. “They just signed a guard so he’s moved on.” Hickey, who was Mr. Basketball in Kentucky this season, will take an official visit to LSU this weekend after playing in the Derby Festival all star game in Louisville. Stovall said Hickey has no other visits planned at this time and will decide his future course of action after the LSU visit.
6-3 Eli Carter committed to Rutgers. USC has expressed some interest in him but didn’t go strongly after him.
Wofford has signed 6-3 Jarrell Byrd of Lynn, MA. Byrd attends the St. Thomas More School in Connecticut. St. Thomas More won the National Prep Championship Tournament in March.
VCU has been where Clemson wants to go. The Rams reached the Final Four this season. Clemson, with four straight tournament appearances, failed to get out of the first round each time. Shaka Smart, the VCU head coach and former Clemson assistant, and Clemson head coach Brad Brownell are going head to head for Irmo guard Jordan Roper. They have been his top two schools and Roper said Thursday that remains the case. Both have coaches were by the school in recent weeks to see Roper. Roper has visited Clemson and he plans to get to VCU this summer. He said there’s no leader between the two and he’s not sure when he’ll make a decision. Roper also has offers from Tulane, Presbyterian, Tennessee State, UNC Asheville and High Point. And he’s been hearing from BYU and UNC Wilmington. Though USC did scout Roper during the season, he said he’s had no contact from the Gamecocks. Roper will play in an AAU tournament this weekend in Ohio.
Seth Constable, Forsyth Country Day’s standout center fielder who has signed with South Carolina, saw his high school season end on Wednesday night when he broke his left leg while making a game-ending catch in a 17-7 win over North Davidson. Coach Andy Partin of FCD said that Constable’s foot got caught under the fence while he was making a catch. His leg twisted, breaking his fibula and tibia. Constable was to have surgery this week.
