Former Clemson Tiger Jonathan Byrd opened the 2011 PGA season with a win at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions at Kapalua in Maui over the weekend. Byrd clinched the tournament in a two hole playoff over Robert Garrigus.
The win wasn’t quite as dramatic as the playoff win Byrd had in the 2010 PGA season finale in Las Vegas. You might remember the ace Byrd had to win that tournament. When Byrd was standing on the tee box that day he was wondering if he was going to keep his tour card this season. Now he is has won two straight and starts the new season as one of the hottest players on the tour.
Byrd has won five times on tour. Sunday’s win means he will play in The Masters and U.S. Open this year.
