Clemson head football coach Dabo Swinney Sunday fired offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Billy Napier and running backs coach and special teams coordinator Andre Powell according to the website CUTigers.com.
Swinney, who oversaw Clemson’s first losing season since 1998, pledged after Friday’s bowl game loss to do everything he could to make his program better.
Napier took over as offensive coordinator at the time Swinney was promoted to interim head coach following Tommy Bowden’s mid-season resignation in 2008. When Swinney was named full time head coach after the season, Napier retained the duties of coordinator and quarterbacks coach. He had the luxury of coaching CJ Spiller, Jacoby Ford and Michael Palmer in 2009 and the offense scored the most ever in a single season at Clemson. But without those weapons this season, the Tigers struggled and were 87th nationally in total offense.
Powell, a South Carolina native, came to Clemson in 2007 and handled the special teams and running backs throughout his tenure.
