For the first time since 1998 and just the third time since 1976 the Clemson football team will finish the season with a losing record. The Tigers 31-26 loss to South Florida in the Meineke Car Car Bowl leaves them with 6-7 record this season, their worst record since the 3-8 mark in ’98 season under Tommy West.
Clemson coach Dabo Swinney took full responsibility for the loss Friday and for the team’s struggles this season. He vowed to correct the mistakes and rebound next year. He called this season a “valley” for the program.
Swinney did not rule out making changes to his staff before next season. When he was asked about potential staff changes he reiterated that he would do “anything necessary” to get things back on track. If you want an indication of just how melancholy Swinney was after the loss you should note his postgame press conference lasted under six minutes. They normally run 25 to 30 minutes.
