USC’s first appearance in the SEC Championship game was anything but memorable. The Gamecocks had no answer for Cam Newton and the Auburn offense as the Tigers steamrolled its way to a 56-17 victory Saturday afternoon at the Georgia Dome.
Counting Saturday, Steve Spurrier has played in the SEC title game eight times, but never before has he been part of a game this lopsided. No one has. The previous high scoring mark was a Spurrier coached Florida team that scored 45 in 1996.
(please note the SEC had audio issues which clipped the beginning of Spurrier’s opening statement)
To say Cam Newton put on a show would be a gross understatement. Newton had 408 yards of total offense. As a team USC had 349 yards. Newton was 17-28 for 335 yards through the air and carried the ball 14 times for 78 yards on the ground. He passed for four touchdowns and ran for another two.
The last time a quarterback accounted for six touchdowns was Danny Weurffel , on another Spurrier coached team.
Newton has been off limits to the media for weeks because of the on going NCAA investigation into his recruiting. But he did join his coach, Gene Chizik, for the post game news conference inside the Georgia Dome.
USC falls to 9-4 and will await its bowl fate Sunday. Auburn improves to 13-0 and will face Oregon for the national championship next month.
