Last weekend Marlboro County LB Lateek Townsend made an official visit to Southern Cal (USC West). This weekend, Townsend plans to make his official visit to South Carolina (USC East). Townsend has been favoring the Gamecocks and he said Thursday night that’s still the case as he prepares to investigate the program closer this weekend. “I’m not looking at traditions or the ACC or the SEC,” Townsend said. “It’s where I fit in. I’m not looking at wins and losses. I want to see if it is a fit for me.” Townsend talked with USC recruiter Ellis Johnson Thursday night. Asked if he might make a commitment this weekend, Townsend responded, “Who knows?” Well, no one does. Early on in his recruiting, Townsend appeared a lock for Clemson. In fact, at a banquet last summer he stated he was going to Clemson. But he publicly has been favoring USC for several weeks now. And he said Thursday night he has no other official visits in mind after this one to USC. Townsend is not sure if he’ll get to Columbia Friday night or Saturday morning. He has a game at Cane Bay Friday night and that’s about a four hour bus ride from Bennettsville.
DB Brandon Ellerbe of Wadesboro, NC, who is currently committed to North Carolina but was once committed to Clemson, said Thursday night he has the two even at the top of his list though he remains committed to the Tar Heels. Ellerbe said Virginia Tech is next on the list followed by Georgia, which he said has been showing him a lot of interest of late. And he will be at Clemson Saturday for the NC State game. Ellerbe said the Tigers have been making a strong push for him. “They have really shocked me and I think they do (have a shot with him). I’m impressed by their enthusiasm. But I won’t make any final decisions until Signing Day.” Ellerbe was named Thursday to the North Carolina Shrine Bowl team.
LB Marcquis Roberts (6-1 205) and TE Rory Anderson (6-5 205) of Powder Springs, GA will take their official visits to USC this weekend, according to Roberts. He says the two plan to arrive in Columbia Friday night. As for Roberts, he says the chances of a commitment this weekend are “highly unlikely” and he still plans to take an official visit to West Virginia. “I still need to talk to the coaches up there to see,” he said. Anderson has USC and Virginia as his top two schools. Roberts has USC leading over West Virginia, Virginia, and South Florida.
QB Martay Mattox (6-1 185) of Athens, GA has already committed to USC and would like to take his official visit to USC this weekend. He says it will depend on whether his mom can make the trip. He was at the USC-Georgia game earlier this season and said, “It was loud”. Mattox says he has shut down the recruiting process and is not talking to other schools. He will only take the visit to USC. This season, Mattox has over 1600 yards passing and 19 touchdowns through the air. He has thrown three interceptions on offense and picked off three as a defender. He has also rushed for 650 yards and five more scores.
DL Deion Barnes (6-4 230) of Philadelphia has USC in his top five along with Georgia, Penn State, Pitt, and Michigan. He says he wants to visit all five. “I need to get back in contact with South Carolina to see if they still want me or not,” said Barnes. “I haven’t talked to them lately.” He has already visited USC and likes the school. Barnes will not take any visits until the season is complete as his team begins post-season play tomorrow. He was at the Penn State-Michigan game and says, “I enjoyed myself.” Barnes does not have a favorite.
