USC (4-2, 2-2 SEC) was back at the Bluff Road “Proving Grounds” Thursday afternoon as they continued preparations for Saturday contest at Vanderbilt (2-4, 1-2, SEC).
Ellis Johnson, Assistant Head Coach – Defense, said that the Gamecocks have had another good week of practice despite the disappointing loss at Kentucky last week. “Preparation hasn’t been our problem,” said Johnson. “Finishing has. We’ve got to play four quarters – mentally, physically, focus on things.
We had a good week of practice, but until you put it on the game field, you don’t know.”
Johnson said that despite having problems against the pass last week, they could not spend all of their practice time this week working to fix those areas of concern. “It’s a different attack,” said Johnson.
“You can’t put 80 percent of your practice time in pass defense for Vanderbilt because they are a really good option team – zone option and triple option. Right now, we’ve got to get ready for Vanderbilt.”
Saturday’s game will kick at 7 p.m. ET at Vanderbilt Stadium. The game will be televised on FSN with Rich Waltz handling the play-by-play, former Kentucky quarterback Tim Couch providing the analysis and Jenn Hildreth on the sidelines.
