Furman head football coach Bobby Lamb announced today that junior offensive guard Ryan Lee has been suspended from the team for the remainder of the 2010-11 school year following his arrest for shoplifting Saturday night in Travelers Rest.
“We consistently stress to our young men to be safe and to make smart decisions, so when there is a failure to exercise good judgement they must deal with the consequences,” said Lamb on Sunday afternoon.
Lee, a 6-foot-4, 289-pound native of Carrollton, Ga., had started in 16 games over the past two seasons. He was named to the coaches 2010 Preseason All-Southern Conference squad.
According to Lamb, Lee will not take part in any team activities for the remainder of the academic year, after which time his standing will be reviewed, assuming he remains enrolled at the university. He has one season of eligibility remaining.
Lee’s student status will be reviewed through the university’s student conduct process, according to school officials.
A 54-16 winner over Howard on Saturday, Furman (3-2) plays Samford this Saturday in Birmingham, Ala. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. ET.
