We caught up with USC defensive coordinator Lorenzo Ward today on our afternoon show. Whammy had some good thoughts on the Gamecocks matchup against top-ranked Alabama Saturday at Williams-Brice Stadium. You can hear those comments below.
Ward played at Alabama from 1986-89 and helped the Tide win an SEC title in the ’89 season. Needless to say this weekend’s game means a little something extra to him. If Ward wants to hand his old school a loss, his defensive unit will have to figure out a way to slow down reigning Heisman trophy winner Mark Ingram. Last season Ingram rushed for 246 yards against the Gamecocks.
Ingram is far from Bama’s only offensive weapon. His backup, Trent Richardson, is good enough to start for almost any team in the country. In Greg McElroy the Tide have an experienced quarterback and wide receiver Julio Jones is one of the top pass catchers in the SEC.
The Gamecock defense is coming off a rough outing against Auburn two weeks ago, but Ward and the rest of the coaching staff are confident they unit will get back on track this week. With the exception of Arkansas, this is arguably the best offense it will face.
Saturday’s game kicks off at 3:30 at Williams-Brice Stadium in Columbia.
