The University of South Carolina football squad worked out in helmets and shorts at the Bluff Road practice fields Tuesday night. The two-hour session was the first of the fall for the Gamecocks, who are coming off a 7-6 season in 2009.
“The enthusiasm and attitude were excellent tonight,” said head coach Steve Spurrier, who is beginning his sixth season in Columbia. “Guys were fired up and running around pretty hard. We had a few guys cramp at the end, but I think they’ll be all right. We made a lot of mistakes, but again, the enthusiasm and attitude of these guys is pretty good right now. We thought it was a pretty decent first practice.”

Several Gamecocks stood out on the first night, according to Coach Spurrier. “Ace Sanders is a quick, little guy. He can go – we found that out. We found out Marcus Lattimore can catch the ball and run the ball. He had a nice catch from Stephen Garcia. We knew those things coming in, but it was good to see it happen tonight. (Quarterbacks) Andrew Clifford, Connor Shaw and Stephen all made some progress through the summer, especially Andrew Clifford. He threw some good balls. His throwing motion has really improved.” On defense, Coach Spurrier mentioned cornerbacks Stephon Gilmore and Chris Culliver as two players who appeared faster and quicker than they’ve ever been.
Coach Spurrier could not provide any update on the Weslye Saunders situation. However, he did indicate that Weslye is in the best shape of his career. Saunders did practice on Tuesday. Alshon Jeffery was on the sidelines for the first practice after having his wisdom teeth removed. Offensive lineman Jarriel King (strained hamstring) and Rokevious Watkins (stomach virus) also watched from the sidelines. “We’ve only got about 10 linemen right now,” noted Coach Spurrier, saying that freshmen A.J. Cann, Tramell Williams and Ronald Patrick will be good players.
The Gamecocks will return to the practice fields in helmets and shorts again on Wednesday nigh at 7:30. In a scheduling change, the practices from Monday, August 8 through Friday, August 13, will be held at 8:30 a.m., rather than in the evening as previously announced.
