Clemson defensive coordinator Kevin Steele is getting a 200,000 dollar raise to remain at Clemson. Earlier this week Steele flirted with a reported 700,000 dollar per year offer to run the Tennessee defense. His new deal at Clemson will pay him about 575,000 dollars, more than 100,000 less than the Vols offer.
Apparently Steele, who had initially been inclined to accept UT’s offer, had second thoughts when he met with some of the current Clemson players. He told the Post and Courier “I did wrestle with it. ‘Should I pursue it or not?’ At the end of the day I came to the conclusion Clemson was a special place. I think we are there at a special time. The players are the reason we are there.”
The Clemson defense ranked 20th nationally last season under Steele.
