The USC basketball team opens SEC play tomorrow afternoon at Auburn. The Gamecocks finished their non-conference slate at 9-5. The biggest losses didn’t come on the court though. Dominique Archie’s season ending knee injury and the dismissal of Mike Holmes cost USC two starters and perhaps a shot at snapping their six year NCAA tournament drought. Although Darrin Horn remains optimistic about his team heading into conference play.

Senior point guard Devan Downey is looking at the start of SEC play as a clean slate of sorts. He knows that not many people are giving this team much of a chance in the league because of the loss of Archie and Holmes. You sense Downey and his teammates may be taking the “us against the world” approach.

Auburn is 9-6 this season. The Tigers were one of the hottest teams in the SEC at the end of last year but they have been shaky to this point. They are coached by former Gamecock assistant Jeff Lebo. Lebo worked at USC under Eddie Fogler. One of Lebo’s assistants is Ken Potosnak who worked at USC under Dave Odom.
Tomorrow’s game officially tips off at 1:47 and it will be televised on the SEC Network.
